March 4, 2021: A Week In The Life
Last weekend a van-full of lucky folks from our Arizona camp went on their first APB-led overnight trip to the Grand Canyon! While we heard the night in the tents was chilly, students enjoyed beautiful hiking and time to get to know one another better.

Hi! Grace here, back with another A Place Beyond Update fresh for the ides of February. We're still around 100 people, and we still all are living out in the woods, hiding from COVID, taking classes, and seeing what else we can make happen. Let's go campus by campus, shall we?

February 1, 2021: A Week In The Life
Hello to friends new and old! I'm Grace, and I'm here to update you on what's happening here at APB. We're back and better than ever for the first week of our second semester! Here's what's up. We’ve welcomed 108 students from 59 schools across 2 campuses — one in the Bradshaw Mountains of Arizona and one in Colorado’s Front Range.

It's finals season on campus, and everything feels a little quiet as students hunker down with their work. But as some students cozy up with a 10-page essay, more every day submit their final projects for the semester. Thus is a community with students from so many different schools and so many different schedules.

Hey all! Big news! Both of our sites for this spring are just about filled up! We have begun making waitlists and expect to be able to take a few more students as peoples’ plans change, but right now we’ve accepted just about to our limit for the two sites we have available. We are so excited about the cohorts we’ve accepted and hope to offer some more details

Hey! Here’s what’s up at APB.We had our storytelling trip this weekend in Agua Fria. Though we initially forgot the sleeping bags, everything pulled together, and it made for a great story! We also went on a very early morning (4:30 am) day hike in Sedona’s Oak Creek Canyon. We’ve had two awesome new guests this week:

Hi! I’m Grace, and I’m so excited to share some updates on the beginnings of APB’s fall semester.
Expectations vs. Reality — A Comic
Joy Reeves outlines the expectations she had for the fall versus the reality in a wonderful comic.
Brown at A Place Beyond
I found it difficult to recruit some friends whom I thought would really benefit from an experience like APB, and I mostly only managed to convince friends who already had previous outdoors experience. The current glaring lack of people of color in the outdoors creates a feedback loop: many people of color don’t see themselves represented or have any experience in this predominantly white space, so they’ll likely just avoid it.
COVID-free Study Away
Hi, I’m Michaela. I am a 5th-year senior from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I study Music Therapy and American Sign Language.
Academic Excellence at A Place Beyond
Our mission at A Place Beyond is to create an exceptional in-person learning community for college students taking their coursework online. The idea of taking classes in the woods may sound like a break from academic rigor, but we put academic success and fulfillment above all else. We see ourselves as additive to a college education, not distractive.
Help Support Low Income Students During COVID-19
Accessibility at A Place Beyond. Where we are, and where we're going. Help us raise $20k to cover the costs of students for whom APB is out of reach.
We've Arrived!
After months of planning and dreaming, our participants are here! While we had a lot of fun imagining what A Place Beyond would look like, it’s been a dream to see that vision come to life in the hands of these bright, funny, compassionate people.
COVID-19 protection at A Place Beyond
A Place Beyond participants will engage in group living, which means that we will act as one family unit for the duration of the semester — living together while social distancing from the rest of the world.
A Day in The Life
While you might love the idea of an intentional community with amazing college students in some of the most beautiful country Arizona has to offer, you can’t help but ask yourself, “...yeah, but what would it LOOK like to be at A Place Beyond?”
